The Mystery Behind the Breitling Navitimer Part 1

To commemorate the 125th birthday of the Breitling, the company released a Breitling Navitimer watch to celebrate.  Now, there’s been a lot of confusion because of this.  The Breitling Navitimer watch is not 125 years old, Breitling the company is.  We are going to take a deeper look into the Breitling Navitimer history and its journey that made it the number one aviation watch today.

The version of the story we are telling here at the Breitling Blog, is not definitely the whole story. The only people who know the real story of the birth of the Breitling Navitimer are not talking; it is clouded in mystery, conspiracy theories, and a lot of emotion.

The best place to start is the name… Navitimer derives from two words; Navigation and Timer.  It all started in 1952 when Breitling partnered with Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) in 1952 and the AOPA made the Breitling Navitimer it’s official watch.  This was also the birth of the winged B logo because the AOPA watches all bore the wings on the dial and the Breitling logo was on the back; eventually the two came together to form the “winged B”.

The first movement was the Valjoux 72, however it was replaced by the Venus 178 movement.  The Valjoux 72 is very rare today and is a prized watch for Breitling enthusiast today.

Breitling Superocean Heritage 46 Watch

Breitling’s Superocean Heritage 46 watch from Breitling’s Aeromarine Collection known for a few things. It’s known for its 660 foot water resistance, its known for its 1950 style logo, and its known for its weird and quirky minute hand.  All reasons why a Breitling watch has a coveted and almost cult like following.  Design and luxury have no limit when a Breitling watch is created and the Superocean Heritage 46, available in two sizes, 38 mm and 46 mm, is no exception.

Even though the Breitling Superocean Heritage 46 is based on celebrating past Breitling Superocean watches, some features are updated including a steel and aluminum construction fitted bezel with a 120 tooth unidirectional mechanism instead of a synthetic bezel; and instead of the old school mineral glass, the Breitling Superocean Heritage 46 uses scratch resistance and glareproofed sapphire crystal on both case sides.

As with every Breitling watch, the Breitling Superocean Heritage 46 boast a Breitling 17 caliber, self winding mechanical movement, 40 hour minimum power reserve, 28,800 vibrations per hour, 25 jewels, dial aperture calendar, steel case, screw-locked crown with two gaskets, and a screwed in caseback.

The picture above shows my favorite Superocean Heritage 46 watch complete with self-winding movement, a steel case, black dial, and Ocean Classic bracelet in steel.  The Ocean Classic bracelet in steel is by far the best bracelet for a Superocean Heritage 46 watch.  It’s sleek and smooth with an intricate braided pattern and distinct design.  Of course you can try the Ocean Racer strap in black, blue or red, but to me it just doesn’t do justice to the watch case.

Breitling Titanium Bracelets

breitling professional aerospace titanium watch
Want a durable Breitling watch? How about a Breitling Professional Aerospace made out of Titanium? The first thing most people think of when they hear the word “Titanium” is a superhero, usually the “man of steel” himself, Superman. But before we get visions of flying around the globe fighting crime with our Titanium Breitling watch check out a few facts about Titanium and how awesome it was for Breitling to include it as an option:

Titanium…

  • is a chemical element with a symbol of Ti and an atomic number of 22
  • is light, tough, radiant, corrosion resistant, a transition metal, and silver
  • can be alloyed with iron, vanadium, aluminum, and many other elements
  • when alloyed it is used for missiles, jet engines, chemical plants, cars, prostheses, implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phone, and much more
  • unalloyed is just as strong as other steels but 45% lighter

Titanium

But Titanium, although one of the coolest features of the Breitling Professional Aerospace watch, it’s not the only feature. This Breitling watch comes with a Breitling 79, SuperQuartz(TM) movement, EOL indicator, 1/100th second chronograph, a digital display with day and date programmed for up to 4 years, 330 feet of water resistance, unidirectional and ratcheted crown, and sapphire glareproofed crystal on both sides… just to name a few.

Hevad Khan from Poughkeepsie, NY is the proud winner of a new Breitling watch and some other great prizes…like one million dollars.  The 23 year old professional poker player was officially announced the 2008 Caesars Palace Classic champion.

However, Hevad Khan is no stranger to Lady Luck, last year he was sixth place at the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event and he also won at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut; a complete earnings of over $2.5 million in two years.  You can read more about his win here…but let’s take a look at the Breitling watch.

Breitling Chrono CockpitHevad Khan won a Breitling Chrono Cockpit watch valued at over $15,000.00.  The Breitling Chrono Cockpit boasts a Breitling 13 caliber and self-winding mechanical movement.  Other technical specifications of this Breitling watch include a 42 hour power reserve, 28,800 vibrations per hour, 25 jewels, a dial aperture calender, 100m of water resistance, an unidirectional and ratcheted bezel, a screw-locked crown with two gaskets, a screwed in caseback, sapphire and glareproofed crystal, and a beautiful case available in steel, two-tone, or 18 k yellow gold.

Congratulations Hevad Khan for your win… especially the Breitling Chrono Cockpit…. even though the $1 million dollars ain’t so bad either.
